NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A second correction officer was randomly attacked by an inmate at Rikers Island one day after another officer was stabbed 15 times in the head on Monday.

The latest unprovoked incident happened Tuesday in the housing area at one of the facilities at the city jail, according to the Correction Officers' Benevolent Association.

The officer suffered a broken nose and a broken eye socket. He's expected to have surgery on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, DOC Commissioner Louis Molina called Monday's stabbing at the Anna M. Kross Center by inmate Dennis Applewhite "unprovoked" and "heinous."

"We will not tolerate any assaults on our Members of Service who show up to work each day to keep our jails safe. ... We are praying for this officer to make a speedy recovery," Molina said.

Molina said Applewhite was re-arrested and that the department is investigating.

On Monday, another DOC inmate died in custody — the 18th this year.

Gilberto Garcia, 26, died exactly three years to the day from the start of his pretrial detention at Rikers. The city's medical examiner will determine his cause of death.
