NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 26-year-old man who has been incarcerated at Rikers Island for three years died Monday, the 18th person to die at the jail this year, authorities said.
Gilberto Garcia was pronounced dead at 12:50 p.m. at the Anna M. Kross Center where he was being housed, officials said.
Garcia's death came almost exactly three years from the day he entered Rikers Island on Nov. 2, 2019 for a first-degree robbery charge.
"We send our deepest condolences to Mr. Garcia's loved ones and family at this difficult time," said DOC Commissioner Louis A. Molina. "As with every death that occurs in custody, we will conduct a preliminary investigation into the cause and circumstances."
The cause of Garcia's death is still under investigation.
