NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A Brooklyn man was arrested on Monday for nearly tricking a woman out of $30,000 by claiming he was a Microsoft employee, according to police.

Yongkang Weng, 31, faces charges of attempted grand larceny, conspiracy, and scheme to defraud.

The scam happened at around 12:25 p.m. on Monday in Mineola when a man claiming to be a Microsoft employee called a 57-year-old woman.

The man then told the victim that there was a $30,000 gambling charge on her bank account.

After the initial call, the victim received a second call from another man claiming to work for Chase Fraud Prevention.

The second man on the call then convinced her to withdraw $30,000 in cash from her Chase account to settle the debt. She was told that a bank agent would meet her at her house to collect the payment.

After withdrawing the money, the victim became suspicious and notified the police.

A thorough investigation was conducted and Weng was arrested.

It wasn't clear if the caller was one or two men, or if Weng acted alone.

Weng will be arraigned on Tuesday.

Police urge potential victims to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-242-TIPS or call 911. All calls will remain anonymous.
