NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – The body of a 9-year-old boy was found early Thursday in the waters off Brooklyn, where he apparently drowned after wandering away from his family at the Red Hook Ikea, police said.
The devastating discovery was made around midnight, three hours after the boy vanished around 9 p.m. as his parents shopped at the furniture outlet on Beard Street.
Surveillance video shows the child, who was nonverbal and had autism, walking inside the Ikea with his family.
A second camera captured him walking slowly out of the building and to the Erie Basin, according to police.
The boy’s shoes, a pair of orange Crocs, were found near the water’s edge as first responders descended on the area for a frantic search.
The massive response included NYPD divers, K9 units, drones, helicopters and fire apparatuses.
After he was found, EMS rushed him to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, but he couldn't be saved.
An investigation into his death is ongoing. He hasn’t yet been officially identified.
