NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The NYPD is investigating after a 17-year-old boy was injured in a police-involved shooting in Brooklyn Thursday afternoon.

According to officials, NYPD officers and one sergeant patrolling a "summer violence shooting zone" witnessed a group of teens fighting near the intersection of East 95th Street and Clarkson Avenue in East Flatbush.

When they attempted to break up the fight, a woman and a 17-year-old boy on a Razor scooter took off.

The woman was quickly apprehended and dropped a bag, whose contents remain under investigation.

Officers tried stopping the boy on the scooter but lost him.

The teen was eventually spotted coming out of driveway near East 95th Street and Clarkson Avenue.

As police began chasing the teen on the scooter, he dropped a purple 9mm handgun and tried picking it up.

Authorities said the teen ignored the officers' repeated demands to not pick up the gun but continued to reach for the weapon and picked it up.

Officers then fired one shot, striking the teen in the thigh.

"He drops the gun. He goes to pick it up. We're talking seconds," Chief of Patrol John Chell said. "Approximately 15 feet apart, face to face, he was given repeated instructions not to pick up the firearm and that's what he did. He went to pick it up, and the officer had to defend himself."

The teen was placed in custody and police rendered aid for his injury. He was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County where he was expected to survive.

A police officer was taken to SUNY Downstate Medical Center for treatment of tinnitus.

The shooting was all captured on body-worn cameras, officials said. There were also multiple surveillance cameras in the area, including NYPD cameras located at the intersection.
