NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Dozens of cars were seized by deputy sheriffs seized with counterfeit paper license plates during an overnight sweep in the Bronx, according to officials.
Authorities conducted a sweep in Co-Op City and across streets the north Bronx between midnight and 6 a.m. where 76 vehicles were picked up, New York City Sheriff Joseph Fucito said.
According to Fucito, officials used license-plate-reader technology in order to identify some of the vehicles using fake tags.
Sheriffs will investigate who owns the cars which included two tractor-trailers and a bucket truck, Fucito added.
"Having fraudulent plates on your vehicle opens up the motorist to a slew of vehicle and traffic and parking offenses, as well as potential tax offenses for not paying commercial motor-vehicle tax or motor-vehicle-tax usage," Fucito told The New York Post.
