NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A man was sentenced to prison for beating and choking a 12-year-old girl during a gunpoint robbery in her building in the Bronx, prosecutors announced on Monday.

Gabriel Narvaez, 46, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for robbery and burglary, along with a concurrent seven-year sentence for assault, followed by five years of post-release supervision.

According to court documents, on March 9, 2020, at around 3:50 p.m., Narvaez waited outside a building on East 139th Street in Mott Haven, targeting the child as she returned home from school.

As she entered the building, Narvaez followed her inside, pulled out a gun, and launched a violent attack, prosecutors said. He pistol-whipped, punched, and kicked her as she struggled to defend herself. During the assault, he stole her keys and cellphone before fleeing the scene.

While fleeing, he left behind a surgical mask and a baseball cap, which were later tested for DNA. The results matched Narvaez, leading to his arrest on Nov. 19, 2020.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital with gashes to her head, bruises to her body, and internal bleeding, prosecutors said.  She was later treated and released but will go through  psychiatric counseling.

"Despite her injuries, she fought back,"  Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark said. "Hopefully this sentence will bring a measure of justice to this brave child."
