NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — Five-year-old twins were found dead at a Bronx apartment building last year, and despite initial belief that they died of a medical tragedy, the results of an autopsy released on Wednesday revealed that they were smothered.
The children, a boy and a girl, were found unconscious in their family’s apartment a week before Christmas on East 175th Street, in the Morris Heights section of the Bronx. They were later pronounced dead, and it was theorized that they died of medical complications.
An autopsy by the medical examiner has now determined that the twins were smothered to death, and both cases are being treated as a homicide.
The medical examiner will meet with the Bronx District Attorney’s Office to decide the charges, and ascertain who is responsible for the murders.
On the morning of Dec. 18, when the children were discovered, police said that their mother was so emotional that her screams could be heard down the street as they arrived.
The following day, she underwent a psychological examination.
The twins lived with their mother and father, and neighbors from the building recalled them as a happy pair that were ready to give hugs.
