NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A wrong-way driver died on Friday evening after he crashed into another car in Brooklyn, setting both on fire, police said.

At about 9:46 p.m. police responded to the crash scene at Kings Highway and Avenue M in Marine Park.

An initial investigation showed that an unidentified man was driving a 2012 Ford Focus sedan eastbound on Avenue M, traveling against the flow of traffic. The driver was moving at a high rate of speed as he approached the intersection of East 34th Street, officials said.

Police said that the motorist continued through the intersection, struck a raised curb and became airborne. He entered the westbound lanes of Kings Highway and struck a 2024 Toyota Camry sedan, operated by a 47-year-old woman.

The Ford burst into flames upon impact, which set the Toyota on fire, police said.

The woman was able to exit her car and remained at the scene. She was uninjured.

Officials said that the wrong-way driver did not exit the Ford and sustained burns throughout his body. EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

The identity of the man is pending, police said.

An investigation is ongoing by the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad.
