NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – New York City is top of the heap—a blazing 60-ton heap of pot!
The city consumes more cannabis by metric tons than any other city on Earth, and it's not even close, according to an annual global ranking of cities by health resource group CFAH.
The 2023 Cannabis Global Price Index found New York consumes 62.3 metric tons of weed a year, giving it the title of "world's largest cannabis-consuming city."
That’s over 15 tons more than the runner-up, Sydney, Australia, which consumes 45.8 metric tons annually.
Los Angeles took the third spot with 35 metric tons, while Chicago was fourth at 24.9 metric tons.
The report also found cannabis is pretty affordable in New York compared to other cities globally—but it's also more expensive here than in most other U.S. cities.
The five boroughs ranked 22 by price of cannabis per gram worldwide but came in at 4 in the U.S.
A gram costs $12.50 in New York compared to $33.80 in Tokyo, which is the most expensive city for weed on Earth, the study found.
Asked about the ranking Thursday, New Yorkers weren’t surprised, telling WCBS 880 the city is a stressful place to live and pot’s legal now. "You're going to see it more, you're going to see the numbers rise everywhere," one man said.
