Charles Osgood, former WCBS 880 anchor and longtime host of CBS' 'Sunday Morning,' dies at 91

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/ WCBS 880) –  Charles Osgood, an award-winning journalist renowned for his 22-year tenure as the host of CBS' "Sunday Morning," his notable contributions to "The Osgood File," and tenure as an anchor and reporter for WCBS 880, passed away at his home in New Jersey on Tuesday, at the age of 91.

Born in the Bronx and a Fordham University graduate with a degree in economics, Osgood's journey in broadcasting began long before his time at CBS.


His earlier roles included working at ABC News, managing WHCT-TV in Hartford, Connecticut, and serving as a program director and classical music announcer at WGMS Radio in Washington, D.C.

He was also an anchor and reporter for WCBS News Radio 880 before joining CBS News in 1971.

Beginning his career at CBS News, Osgood quickly became a respected anchor and reporter, contributing to major broadcasts on the network.

His roles included anchoring the "CBS Morning News," "CBS Evening News with Dan Rather," and "CBS Sunday Night News."

Osgood received multiple rewards throughout his career. These included the Walter Cronkite Excellence in Journalism Award from Arizona State University, the George Foster Peabody Award, and the National Association of Broadcasters Distinguished Service Award.

His predecessor at "Sunday Morning," Charles Kuralt, praised Osgood as "one of the last great broadcast writers," according to CBS News.

In 1994, Osgood took over from Charles Kuralt as the host of "Sunday Morning," winning three Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Morning Program. Additionally, he earned three more Emmy Awards for his reporting. Osgood was also known for hosting the long-standing radio program "The Osgood File."

Osgood's retirement in 2016 from "Sunday Morning" with him signing off with his familiar phrase from his daily "Osgood File" broadcasts: "I'll see you on the radio."

His family revealed that the cause of his death was dementia, according to CBS.
