NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — NYPD officers shot an armed man in Brooklyn on Friday night after he pointed his weapon at a sergeant, police officials said.
Uniformed officers were driving in two unmarked cars near Flatlands Avenue and East 80th Street in Canarsie at 9:45 p.m. on Friday night when they heard a gunshot.
Police say the officers then saw a 50-year-old man run out of a convenience store and head northbound on the sidewalk of East 80th Street. Two officers pursued the suspect on foot, while the others followed in their vehicles.
The pursuing cops verbally identified themselves and gave the man multiple commands, but he did not comply, officials said.
“The male then ran behind a tree and pointed his firearm at a uniformed sergeant,” NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera said. “Four members discharged their firearms at the male.”
The suspect was struck in the torso. Police rendered aid to the man, and EMS transported him to Brookdale University Medical Center in critical condition.
No officers were injured, but they were transported to an area hospital for evaluation.

A gun was recovered from the scene, and a second firearm—a ghost gun—was found inside the convenience store.
Police said that the incident was caught on both police body cameras and security video from inside the store.
“Our officers confronted a dangerous individual armed with a firearm and reacted without hesitation,” Rivera said. “Due to their actions, further violence was prevented”
The shooting is being investigated by the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division.
