NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Nearly two dozen City Council members are calling for heftier fines for illegal dirt bikes and ATVs.
WABC reported Thursday that 23 Council members plan to ask Mayor Bill de Blasio to sign a law to raise the fines.
The members are also seeking increased enforcement of the illegal vehicles.
Under Jonathan's Law, fines would rise to $750 for the first offense, an increase of 50%. Additional offenses would carry a $1,500 fine.
The law is named after a 4-year-old boy who was critically injured by a dirt bike in a hit-and-run in Queens in July, according to the report. A 29-year-old man was later charged in the crash.
In a letter obtained by WABC, lawmakers wrote to the mayor, “(We) implore you, as an exercise of executive power, to increase the maximum fines for unlawful dirt bike/ATV use and street racing, and to revise NYPD enforcement strategies so that they are more effective in quelling this crisis.”
Earlier this year, the NYPD announced a crackdown on illegal dirt bikes and ATVs after receiving a record number of calls about them. Since then, the department has seized hundreds from city streets.
