NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A 3-year-old girl was killed, and her 2-year-old sister was injured, when a driver plowed into them as they crossed a street in Harlem with their family on Thursday evening, police said.

The driver, a 40-year-old man in a Nissan SUV, struck the girls around 7:45 p.m. while making a left turn from Lenox Avenue onto West 135th Street, according to police.

The girls were crossing the street with their 37-year-old mother, who was pushing their 4-month-old sister in a stroller.

When the driver realized what happened, he rushed to help the mom carry the three sisters to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem, which is across the street from the crash scene.

The 3-year-old suffered fatal injuries to her body, while the 2-year-old suffered minor injuries to her head, police said.

The mother and 4-month-old were not injured.

The driver remained at the scene, according to police. No arrests had been reported Friday as the NYPD continued to investigate.
