E-bike driver dies after collision with SUV at Bronx intersection

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The NYPD Highway District's Collision is investigating a day after an e-bike rider died following a collision at a Bronx intersection last month, authorities said.

At approximately 11:37 a.m. on Friday, September 23, a, police responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of East 188th Street and Park Avenue in Belmont.


Upon arrival, officers observed a 67-year-old woman who had been riding an E-Bike, lying on the roadway.

EMS transported the aided female to Saint Barnabas Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased on Saturday, September 24.

Further investigation by the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad determined that a 63-year-old man was traveling east bound on East 188th Street in a 2010 Ford Escape and approached the intersection at Park Avenue, while the woman on the e-bike was traveling west bound on East 188th Street, on the south sidewalk, attempting to cross Park Avenue.

The e-bike proceeded into the crosswalk, while the Ford Escape was making a right turn onto Park Avenue when they collided.

As a result of the collision, the e-scooter driver was ejected and thrown to the pavement, and then struck by the front and rear driver side tires of the Ford Escape.

The driver of the Ford remained at the scene and was not injured.

There are no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing.
