NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A man was stabbed to death and two other people were injured, one of them critically, in a horrific knife fight Sunday evening on an "out of control" stretch of East 14th Street in the East Village.

Dozens watched in horror as the stabbings unfolded around 5:45 p.m. near Trader Joe's at East 14th Street and Avenue A.

According to police, a 38-year-old man was stabbed in the neck; a 51-year-old woman was stabbed in the leg; and a 32-year-old man was stabbed in the back.

All three victims were rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where the 38-year-old was pronounced dead. He has not been identified.

The 51-year-old victim was in critical condition at the hospital, while the 32-year-old was stable.

Owen Barbagallo told PIX11 that the victims were "bleeding really badly" after the altercation.

"There was a homeless guy, came running down the street from the First Avenue side towards Avenue A with a knife," Barbagallo said. "He attacked another homeless guy he didn't like. And there was a big altercation with three people. The guy with a knife got a lamp thrown at his head. And eventually the police came pretty quickly."

A 30-year-old man was taken into custody. Charges were pending against him Monday. His relation to the victims wasn't immediately clear.

Blood remained on the sidewalk Monday morning as the NYPD continued to investigate more than 12 hours later.

A cutting instrument was recovered at the scene, police said.

City Council Member Keith Powers called the area "out of control" in a social media post.

"It's unacceptable to continue to have the conditions on the street remain status quo," Powers said. The councilman said there needs to be "a dedicated NYPD presence to curb illicit activities, continued enforcement of illegal vendors, ongoing attention to trash and sanitation cleanup, and more."

In February, Mayor Eric Adams walked the same block and called it "disgusting."

"I had the patrol commander meet me over there and I said, 'what is this?'" the mayor said at the time.
