NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A charging electric scooter sparked a fire that killed a 91-year-old woman and injured at least ten other people in the Bronx early Wednesday morning, the FDNY said.
The three-alarm fire broke out at a six-story apartment building on Park Avenue, near E. 161st Street in the Melrose section, around 4:50 a.m.
The FDNY on Wednesday afternoon deemed the fire accidental and said an "electric scooter being charged" caused the blaze.
Officials said at least 11 people were injured in the fire, three of them critically. The eight other injuries, including a firefighter, were said to be non-life-threatening.
One of the critically injured victims, a 91-year-old woman, later died of her injuries at Lincoln Hospital, officials said.
Nearly 140 fire and EMS members responded to the fire, which officials said started on the second floor before spreading to the floors above.
Citizen App video shows flames and smoke pouring out of the top of the building.
The fire was brought under control by 6:40 a.m. Authorities are investigating the cause and whether an open door may have helped the fire spread.
Twenty families were said to be displaced by the fire.
