NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The Empire State Building is teaming up with City Harvest to honor Hunger Action Month this week.
To help raise awareness about food insecurity, the iconic New York City landmark will light up green on Wednesday, Sept. 22.

According to City Harvest – New York City’s first and largest food rescue organization – food insecurity surged 41% overall in New York City since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hunger also surged “a shocking 51% among NYC children.”
The group has been working to address those needs over the last year and a half and has been hoping to bolster donations during the month of September.
City Harvest noted that the economic impact of the pandemic is likely to continue, even as the country continues to overcome the virus.
“For New Yorkers who lost loved ones, jobs, homes, or savings during this crisis, these challenging times are far from over,” City Harvest wrote on its website.
The group collects donations and distributes meals and non-perishable food items to New Yorkers in all five boroughs.
City Harvest also accepts monetary contributions and noted that all donations made during the month of September will be matched, “dollar-for-dollar, up to $150,000” by Denise Littlefield Sobel.
