NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A federal correctional officer allegedly smuggled drugs and alcohol to inmates at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center in exchange for $10,000, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Jeremy Monk, 31, who worked at the MDC from May 2020 until he resigned on April 18, was arrested on Tuesday and charged in Brooklyn Federal Court with smuggling contraband into the Sunset Park prison — which recently housed Ghislaine Maxwell and R. Kelly.

The MDC staff was made aware of Monk's plot three days prior to his resignation, according to the criminal complaint. Monk wanted to be compensated by inmates in exchange for drugs, alcohol, and tobacco that were hidden in the MDC staff bathroom.

That afternoon, Monk went to the staff restroom, consistent with the information MDC staff received. After Monk left the restroom, MDC staff secured and searched the location and found more than nine ounces of marijuana hidden on a shelf under cleaning materials.

Before Monk reported to work on the day he resigned, federal officials said he called the MDC’s Human Resources department and stated that he wanted to immediately resign. When asked why, he told them it was over "some stupid investigation."

According to the complaint, the 31-year-old smuggled contraband on prior occasions. On Dec. 5, 2020, staff members conducted a search of the cell of an inmate due to the smell of marijuana coming from his cell. No pot was found, but staff recovered a cell phone, which is also contraband in a correctional facility.

Financial records show that three days before the MDC staff recovered the cell phone, an associate of that inmate attempted to pay Monk for smuggling the contraband via Cash App seven times in amounts ranging from $750 to $4,000. All seven transactions were blocked by Cash App.

"As alleged, the defendant violated his oath and duty as a correctional officer by smuggling narcotics into the Metropolitan Detention Center," said U.S. Attorney Peace. "This Office, together with our law enforcement partners, are committed to maintaining the safety for incarcerated individuals and BOP employees, and will prosecute those who act as conduits for contraband into a correctional facility."
