NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Alison Russo-Elling, the FDNY EMS lieutenant who was stabbed to death last week during an unprovoked attack while on duty, will be posthumously promoted to captain Wednesday, the FDNY announced Tuesday.

The 61-year-old parademic was murdered Thursday afternoon while working at FDNY EMS Station 49 in Astoria, Queens. Russo-Elling, who was a 25-year veteran of the department, was transported to Mt. Sinai Queens Hospital where she later died.

A wake for Russo-Elling was held Monday and will continue Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Commack Abbey Funeral home on Long Island. On Wednesday, her funeral will be held at the Tilles Center at 720 Northern Blvd. in Brookville at 11 a.m. where her promotion ceremony will also take place.

“Alison Russo was everything we look for in a leader in our Department,” said
Acting Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh. “A dedicated and accomplished veteran of 25 years, she responded to thousands of emergencies, mentored many new EMTs and Paramedics, cared deeply for the communities she served, and set an incredible example for others at Station 49 and at every station she called home throughout her outstanding career. This posthumous promotion is a sign of our deep respect and admiration for all the courageous and selfless work she did throughout her career. We will never forget her.”

Peter Zisopoulos, 34, has been arrested and charged in the fatal attack after barricading himself inside of his apartment near the scene of the killing. Zisopoulos was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue to await his arraignment.

Russo is the 1,158 member of the FDNY to die in the line of duty.
