NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The federal government narced on Mayor Eric Adams' plan to use the rooftops of NYCHA public housing buildings to grow cannabis on Monday.

Adams spoke at an April 9 panel about staffing rooftop marijuana greenhouses with NYCHA tenants and staff and using the profits to subsidize much needed repairs and upkeep in public housing.
Marijuana is still illegal at the federal level though, and more than half of the housing authority’s budget comes from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.
A spokesperson for HUD told Gothamist that Adams hadn’t yet pitched the idea to them, but that it would be impossible given the federal status of marijuana.
“HUD has not been approached on this issue,” said the spokesperson. “There isn't much more to say, marijuana is illegal in public housing.”
The House of Representatives passed a bill to decriminalize Marijuana at a federal level at the beginning of April, but it faces slimmer odds in the Senate.
