NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Five Revel scooter users have sued the service within the past week claiming they were injured while riding in New York City, according to a report.
One of the riders, Phelan Fitzpatrick, filed a lawsuit claiming he was left with bruises and “permanent scarring” after one of the scooters malfunctioned while he was riding in Manhattan this past June, throwing him over the handlebars, the New York Post reported.
Three other users filed lawsuits claiming they were injured after the scooters they used “failed to work properly,” while a fourth user who filed a suit was a passenger who “blame[d] both the driver and the company for negligence,” the outlet reported.
“You have individuals who are not properly trained in the operation of the vehicle and because of the improper training, you have riders who are not able to prevent accidents from happening when they encounter different situations on the road,” attorney Joseph Belluck, who represents Fitzpatrick, told the outlet.
Revel temporarily suspended its New York City service this past July after two Revel riders died in crashes, but resumed service in August with new safety precautions, as well as a helmet requirement.
In a previous statement provided to the Post, a representative for Revel said the service has “strict safety policies in place,” adding that “the moment we are notified that a Revel is not fully functional, we immediately make it unavailable to rent and take it out of service.”
1010 WINS has reached out to Revel for comment on the lawsuits.
