NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The funeral for the 33-year-old New York City firefighter who died a day after fighting a blaze in Queens has been scheduled.

Jesse B. Gerhard collapsed and died in his firehouse on Wednesday, a day after responding to a two-alarm fire in Queens, acting FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said. Gerhard, who was from Islip, Long Island, was working out of a Far Rockaway firehouse.
Kavanagh said in a news conference on Thursday that Gerhard suddenly collapsed Wednesday night at his firehouse. He was taken to a local hospital where he died.
Earlier reports said he’d suffered a heart attack, but Kavanagh said a cause of death is not yet clear.
Gerhard’s funeral will take place on Wednesday at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Bay Shore.
An initial examination of Gerhard has been conducted, the New York City medical examiner’s office told Newsday, though they did not say whether there were any preliminary findings. A full autopsy is expected to be completed in a few weeks.
