The fire broke up around 5 a.m. in Norwalk at a house on Nelson Avenue. Responding firefighters said the house was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived with reports of someone trapped inside.

Investigators said there were power lines on fire across the street and two cars in the driveway of the affected home were also on fire.

Fire officials said they found a man and a woman in the backyard with their 9-year-old after escaping the house. They were trying to rescue their 7-year-old daughter who was asleep in a bedroom on the second floor.

The man attempted to climb to the window when he got burned, fell and broke his arm.

Firefighters were able to raise a ladder to the window, go inside of the burning room and get her out. The family of four were then taken to Norwalk Hospital.

Officials said the 7-year-old later died of her injuries while the other three family members are being treated for smoke inhalation, minor burns and other injuries.
