NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Concealed carry applications are surging in New York City following a 2022 decision by the Supreme Court that loosened the city’s famously strict gun laws.
There’s been a nearly tenfold increase in permit applications per month over the past three years, according to The City, which analyzed NYPD data.
That amounts to tens of thousands of New Yorkers seeking permits since the Supreme Court decision came down.
Jay Bacquero, with Clearview Concealed Carry, said that the jump includes a significant increase in the number of women who want to carry.
“We see rising safety concerns here in New York City, especially among women,” Bacquero said. “Many applicants are telling us they’re feeling unsafe and want to take responsibility for their own protection.”
Applicants must go through 16 hours of instruction as part of a safety training course. Classes are getting more and more busy.
“Not only are we seeing that the classes are getting larger, we’re seeing on average close to 1,000 people are signing up to our email list every month,” said Peter Ticali, with NY Safe Inc.
“We want people to really understand what it means to carry a gun,” Ticali said. “We will specifically ask as the class is starting, ‘Are you ready for this—to responsibly carry something that could be a lethal weapon?’”
Critics call it a dangerous trend that's unfolding in New York.
