NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A group of hackers breached the MTA’s computer systems earlier this year, but were not able to access its operational systems, according to a new report.

The group, which may have had ties to the Chinese government, hacked into the transit agency’s systems in April, the New York Times reported Wednesday.

The hack “appeared to have done little,” as the group “did not gain access to systems that control train cars and rider safety was not at risk,” the outlet reported.

It did, however, stoke fears that that could have happened, according to the outlet.

The agency’s chief technology officer, Rafail Portnoy, told the outlet its “existing multilayered security systems worked as designed, preventing spread of the attack.”

“We continue to strengthen these comprehensive systems and remain vigilant as cyberattacks are a growing global threat,” Portnoy added.
