NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — In celebration of Empire State women, Gov. Kathy Hochul issued a proclamation designating March 2024 Women’s History Month in New York and announced that state landmarks would be lit purple on Friday evening to commemorate International Women’s Day.

“New York is the birthplace of the women’s rights movement, and if not for the brave women who have come before me, I would not be here to serve as the first female Governor of the State of New York,” Hochul said in a statement.

“I am committed to honoring the legacy of all those who fought tirelessly for equality and will always fight to ensure a brighter, more just future for young women and girls in our state," Hochul concluded.

In a video posted to her social media, the governor acknowledged New York women that have inspired her, including Susan B. Anthony, Eleanor Roosevelt and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
