NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A homeless man caught fire on a subway train near Times Square early Monday morning, though it remains unclear exactly how he burst into flames.
The man was sleeping aboard an uptown 3 train in Midtown just after 3 a.m. when the fire ignited, police said.
The man exited the train at the Times Square stop and got the attention of a transit worker, who flagged down cops at the station, according to police.
He was taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he was in stable condition.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Police initially thought someone may have set him on fire, but they now believe he may have set himself on fire.
The incident comes about a year after a 57-year-old woman, who was also homeless, was purposely set on fire on a subway train in Coney Island.
The suspect in that case, Sebastian Zapeta, has pleaded not guilty to murder and arson charges.
