NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Last Friday, Stephen Sondheim passed away at the age of 91. With a career spanning several decades on and off Broadway, Sondheim was considered a titan of American musical theater.
Between his complex musical composition, sophisticated lyrics, and deeply human characters, Sondheim revolutionized Broadway.
On the latest episode of 1010 WINS In Depth, we remember Sondheim.
In three separate interviews, host Budd Mishkin explores Sondheim’s life, legacy, and, of course, the music.
Firstly he speaks to award-winning actor Mandy Patinkin. A star of one of Sondheim’s most beloved shows, Sunday in the Park with George, Patinkin also fondly remembers him as a friend. Above all, he refers to him as a genius. “He was the true genius of everyone I’ve ever known…[he was] equal, if not better than Shakespeare.”
Secondly, he speaks to Judy Collins, the singer who turned one of Sondheim’s stage pieces and transformed it into a pop hit. She reflects on how her life would be different if it weren’t for Sondheim and his music.
Lastly, Budd chats with the Artistic Director and CEO of the Roundabout Theatre Company, Todd Haimes. Having named one of his theaters after Sondheim and producing several revivals of his shows, he explains how he wants to keep both the man and his many messages alive for future generations.
