NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Queens man was convicted for the 2019 rape of his houseguest, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced Wednesday.

The Jackson Heights man, 35-year-old Ahmen Shamim, went through a two-week long trial in Queens Supreme Court where he was found guilty of first-degree rape.

The victim, a 25-year-old native of Bangladesh, moved to the United States to pursue college and was staying in Shamim's house, sharing a room with his niece.

Shamim attacked the victim after she returned from a night out to celebrate her birthday. She was asleep in bed when she awoke to find Shamim restraining her by holding her arms above her head and removing her pants. He then applied pressure to the woman's neck and forcibly raped her.

Police were called to the house that same morning, where Shamim was later arrested.

The victim was treated for physical injuries at a local hospital where a forensic examination was also conducted. The evidence obtained matched Shamim's DNA.

Shamim is scheduled to be sentenced on March 21 and faces up to 25 years in prison.

"The defendant violated the trust of a woman who was a guest in his home. After weighing all the evidence presented at trial, a jury found the defendant guilty," DA Katz said. "The Court is now slated to sentence him to a lengthy term of incarceration as a measure of justice for his crime."
