NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Assemblywoman Jo Anne Simon has launched her campaign to become Brooklyn’s first female borough president.
Simon announced her candidacy for Brooklyn Borough President on Thursday, in front of late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s alma mater, James Madison High School, in Sheepshead Bay. Her Assembly district includes Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill, DUMBO and Gowanus.
Brooklyn’s current borough president, Eric Adams, is term-limited and is currently running for mayor. Brooklyn City Council members Antonio Reynoso, Robert Cornegy and Mathieu Eugene are also vying for the borough president position.
“In honor of Justice Ginsburg, and Shirley Chisolm, and all the women who have gone before carving a path where once there was none, I am pulling my folding chair up to the table and running for Brooklyn Borough President!” Simon said in a statement.
“I am looking forward to bringing the skills and experience of my grassroots community activism and legislative leadership to the Brooklyn Borough Presidency,” she added.
Simon, a Boerum Hill resident, was elected to the New York State Assembly in 2014, her campaign said in a release.
