NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A dead juvenile whale washed up along the Rockaway shoreline around Beach 29th Street on Friday, according to the New York City Parks Department.

Parks received a report of the 16-foot whale carcass around 9 a.m. and sent staff to cordon off the area.

The city is working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society and NYS Department of Environmental to dispose of the corpse.

“We mourn the loss of this awe-inspiring creature,” said the Parks Department in a statement.

Humpback whales have been washing up dead in unusually large numbers, according to a report from NOAA Fisheries.

Six have washed up along the coast of New York and New Jersey so far this year, compared to six over the course of the entirety of 2022.
