NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The New York Knicks are pausing ticket sales for home games at Madison Square Garden after what it described as a "mistake in pricing," venue officials announced on Thursday.
When tickets went on sale Wednesday afternoon, prices for the Oct. 20 opening night game against the Philadelphia 76ers averaged over $2,500 on TicketMaster, according to the New York Daily News. Tickets in Section 418—the skybox—started at $1,039.50, and The Athletic reported a resale price minimum of $1,300 to $1,500 depending on the marketplace.
Pricing will roll back to last year's prices, plus an average increase of 12%, Madison Square Garden Sports Corp. said in a statement. Sales will continue with new prices shortly, and those who already purchased individual tickets will be refunded the difference.
Tickets to see the reigning NBA Champions were expected to spike after a historic season activated New York City, accounting for MSG's 12% spike. Home games during the NBA Playoffs and Finals skyrocketed to thousands just to get into the building.
"Our intention was never to overcharge our loyal fans, and we thank everyone for their support of the Knicks and their patience as we get this right," MSG Sports said.
