NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) –  A Long Island man was convicted on Wednesday in the stabbing of a 21-year-old stranger during a St. Patrick’s Day bar crawl event in March 2023, according to prosecutors.

Martin Carpio, 36, of North Bellmore, was convicted on assault in the first degree and criminal possession of a weapon, Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced.

On March 4, 2023, the victim along with friends attended an event called “LepreCon,” a St. Patrick’s Day bar crawl on Main Street in Farmingdale, according to prosecutors. The four then went to The Dominican Restaurant 4 to grab food, where they met more friends, including a family with two daughters aged 21 and 15, who were celebrating a birthday.

At around 1:50 a.m. on March 5, 2024, Carpio arrived at the restaurant with a friend and allegedly approached the 15-year-old girl, grabbed her arm, and made advances on her, according to the court document.

An argument allegedly broke out between the teen’s father and Carpio, and Carpio punched the father in the throat, prosecutors said.

The group of friends pushed Carpio back and tried  to get him to leave, prosecutors said.

Carpio then allegedly punched the victim in the face.

The victim, his friends, and the restaurant’s security personnel then pushed Carpio out of the restaurant, and he fell to the sidewalk, prosecutors said.

During an argument with multiple people outside, Carpio allegedly pulled out a knife. After being knocked to the ground by one of the victim’s friends, Carpio allegedly got up with the knife in his hand and began pursuing the victim, who backed away with his palms up.

Carpio’s friend then allegedly punched the victim in the back of the head from behind and then Carpio grabbed the victim’s shirt collar and swung his knife, stabbing the young man twice in the upper left rib cage, prosecutor said.

As he stabbed the victim, Carpio allegedly said, “I just stabbed you, b**ch,” according to court documents.

The victim was taken to Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) with a collapsed lung, punctured spleen and diaphragm, and a fractured rib. Immediate medical intervention was necessary to save the victim’s life.

Police arrested Carpio on the same day of the attack.

Carpio faces up to 25 years in prison when he is sentenced on August 9, 2024.
