The 16-year-old and 17-year-old were allegedly passing the loaded gun back and forth in the schoolyard of Mott Hall High School in Claremont just after noon when school safety agents spotted them, the Daily News reported.

Police said the boys claimed the gun belonged to the other and both were taken into custody.

“Dangerous items of any kind are not tolerated in our schools,” schools spokesman Nathaniel Styer told the New York Post. “Our outstanding school staff and School Safety Agents immediately and safely recovered this item, ensuring that all students and staff are safe. All protocols were followed, and we are working closely with NYPD regarding follow-up actions.”

The incident comes after a recent report from the NYPD citing an increase in the number of weapons recovered in the city’s public schools.
