NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Zohran Mamdani slammed mayoral race rival Andrew Cuomo on Thursday over a 9/11-related remark the former governor made.

Speaking to Sid Rosenberg on WABC radio Thursday morning, the former governor said the role of mayor is “a scary job.”

“Any given morning there’s a crisis,” Cuomo said. “And people’s lives are at stake. God forbid, another 9/11. Can you imagine Mamdani in the seat?”

“Yeah, I could—he’d be cheering,” Rosenberg responded.

Cuomo then chuckled and said, “That’s another problem.”

In an interview with PIX 11, Mamdani called the exchange “disgusting.”

“This is Andrew Cuomo’s final moments in public life, and he’s choosing to spend them making racist attacks on the person who’d be the first Muslim to lead this city.”

“Frankly it’s not about me,” Mamdani said. “It’s about the fact there are more than 1 million Muslims who live in New York City. And to have our faith be smeared and slandered by someone who was once considered a leader in the Democratic Party.”

Gov. Kathy Hochul took to X to respond to the comments, as well, writing, “Time to get out of the gutter.”

“Fear-mongering, hate speech, and Islamophobia are beneath New York — and everything we stand for as a state,” the governor wrote.
