NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A police-involved shooting left an NYPD officer wounded and a man dead Tuesday afternoon in Chelsea, authorities confirmed.
The shooting happened at 200 W 24th St, at about 2:42 p.m., officials confirmed during a press conference.
A member of the Homeland Security Investigations - Violent Gang Task Force allegedly saw a man who had an active warrant against him, authorities said.
The officer approached the man and a fight ensued. The suspect then brandished a firearms, cops said.
The officer shot the suspect three times in multiple locations on his body, police said.
He was then transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue in critical condition. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The officer suffered a minor and taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue where he is also being treated for tinnitus.
Authorities have a 26-year-old person in custody.
An investigation remains ongoing.
