NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A 31-year-old New Jersey man was shot and killed on a street in SoHo on Tuesday morning, police said amid reports the killing happened during a botched mugging.

The NYPD received a call just after 5:15 a.m. about a shooting at 41 Greene St., just north of Grand Street.

Responding officers found the victim unconscious with a gunshot wound to his right thigh.

He was rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where he was pronounced dead.

He was identified by police as Javier Osorio-Mejia, of Bayonne. He was reportedly a reseller of high-end sneakers.

Police weren't immediately able to confirm multiple reports that the victim was being mugged when he was shot.

The shooter fled in a black SUV, police said.

No arrests had been reported as of Tuesday.

The shooting comes less than two months after 16-year-old Mahki Brown was fatally shot in the head at a pedestrian plaza on Spring Street in SoHo on May 7. Two male suspects, ages 19 and 16, were arrested in his murder.

Murders are rare in the NYPD's 1st Precinct, which includes SoHo. As of Sunday, there had been two murders in the precinct this year, NYPD crime data shows. There had been no murders over the same period in 2023.
