NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A man was killed Wednesday night in a shooting at a subway station just blocks from his home in Brooklyn, police said.

Officers responding to a 911 call at 11:15 p.m. found the victim lying face down in blood by a MetroCard machine at the Rockaway Avenue A/C station in Ocean Hill.

He’d been shot once in the head, according to police, who said he was pronounced dead at Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center.

He was later identified as 47-year-old Freddie Weston, who lived less than a mile south of the station.

The NYPD is investigating the circumstances surrounding the killing, including whether a potential confrontation or robbery led to the gunfire.

No arrests had been reported as of Thursday, and no description of a suspect has been released.

Blood was still on the floor in front of the MetroCard machine as commuters arrived to head to work in the morning.

The latest crime data from the NYPD, released Wednesday, showed transit crime was up 4% in August compared to August 2023. However, it comes amid a 5.5% drop in transit crime this year compared to 2023, as of Sept. 1.
