Turkish national arrested for bashing windows at Turkish consulate in Manhattan

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Turkish national was arrested for smashing windows at the Turkish consulate in Manhattan on Monday, according to police.

Recep Akbiyik, 29, was arrested on Friday around 10:15 a.m., according to officials.

He’s accused of smashing windows at the Turkish consulate on the corner of First Avenue and East 46th Street with a crowbar around 3 a.m. Monday.

No one was injured during the incident.

Akbiyik faces charges of attempted burglary, criminal weapons possession, terroristic threats, criminal mischief and menacing.

The attack was carried out between the Turkish presidential election and a coming runoff between incumbent Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and challenger Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu.

Erdoğan denounced the vandalism as an act of terrorism. It is not yet clear whether the act was politically motivated.
