NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A subway rider was bashed in the head and shoved onto the tracks at the City Hall subway station--but no train was coming and he avoided serious injury in the attack, police said Thursday.

The NYPD released surveillance images of a suspect armed with a wooded board following Wednesday's unprovoked assault as they continue their search for him.

The 29-year-old victim was standing on the southbound 4/5/6 platform just before 10:15 a.m. when another man came up from behind and hit him in the head with an unknown object, police said.

The assailant then pushed the victim onto the tracks and fled on foot, according to cops.

The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by EMS to NYC Health and Hospitals/Bellevue, where he was listed in stable condition.

Surveillance video shows the suspect carrying a piece of wood at the station around the time of the attack.

The attack came just over a week after a man randomly pushed a woman into a train and onto the tracks at a Midtown station, leaving the 30-year-old victim with critical injuries. A suspect was arrested in Newark the next day.

Two people were also killed in recent weeks when they fell onto subway tracks in incidents that have been described as accidents.

On Wednesday, a man in his 40s lost his footing and fell onto the tracks at the Herald Square subway station, where he was fatally hit by a train, police said. And about two weeks ago, an 18-year-old woman suffered a medical episode, collapsed onto the tracks at a subway station in Jackson Heights and was fatally struck by a train in what transit officials called a "tragic accident."

Anyone with information on the subway push is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
