NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A man arrested for stabbing two teen sisters eating with their parents at Grand Central Terminal on Christmas Day has been charged with hate crimes, authorities said.
Steven Hutcherson, 36, was charged with second-degree attempted murder, first- and second-degree assault and first-degree attempted assault — all as hate crimes, according to the Manhattan District Attorney's Office said.
He was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
The victims, ages 14 and 16, were visiting from South America when they were stabbed at about 11:25 a.m. while inside of the Grand Central Dining Concourse.
According to a bail application, Hutcherson allegedly approached dining area staff members and said "I don't want the white man to get at you." then asked for a seat to place an order and said he wanted to "sit with the crackers."
Hutcherson then stabbed the 16-year-old in the back in an "unprovoked" attack, officials said.
He then allegedly stabbed the 14-year-old in the thigh as the family attempted to get away.
Both girls were transported to Bellevue Hospital after the attack.
