NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 23-year-old man was sentenced to 23.5 years to life in prison on Wednesday for starting a shootout at a 2019 event celebrating elderly community members in Brooklyn that injured 11 and killed one, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.
Kyle Williams was convicted of shooting 38-year-old Jason Pagan in the head and torso during an argument at the 2019 Old Timers Day celebration in Brownsville Park.
The shooting sparked a shootout between rival groups in which 11 bystanders were caught in the crossfire.
“A beloved community celebration held each year turned tragic when this defendant opened fire in the middle of a crowd,” said Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez. “Senseless gun violence that puts innocent people in harm’s way has destroyed too many lives and will not be tolerated in Brooklyn. As a result of this defendant’s outrageous actions a man lost his life, and 11 other people were shot and wounded.”
Police arrested Williams on October 16, 2019 after witnesses identified him as the shooter.
He was convicted of murder, weapon possession and reckless endangerment on April 20.
