11 SHOT IN NYC: At least 2 killed, 9 wounded in overnight shootings

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- At least 11 people were shot, two of them fatally, in New York City late Tuesday into early Wednesday, police said.

Gunshots rang out as Fourth of July fireworks echoed across the city overnight, leaving two men dead and at least nine more people wounded in eight shootings.

The total number of shootings may exceed 10 across Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx, according to police.

The first fatal shooting was around 1:45 am. in Inwood.

A 30-year-old man was shot in the face on Vermilyea Avenue, between Academy and W. 204th streets.

EMS rushed him to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem, but he didn't survive.

An 18-year-old man was then killed in a double shooting on Morris Avenue, near E. 182nd Street, in Fordham Heights around 2:20 a.m.

He was struck in the leg and pronounced dead at Saint Barnabas Hospital.

A 19-year-old man was also hit in the hip in that shooting. He was taken to Saint Barnabas in stable condition.

A gun was recovered at the scene, police said. Two people, described by the NYPD as persons of interest, were taken into custody.

The identifies of the two men have been withheld pending the notification of their families.

Among those injured in the overnight shootings was a 34-year-old man who was shot in the leg at 2745 Schley Ave. in the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx shortly after 12:30 a.m.

Another man was shot in the buttocks at 2475 St. Raymond Ave. in Westchester Square, the Bronx, shortly before 1 a.m. He was hospitalized at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi.

Around 1:30 a.m. in Throggs Neck, a 36-year-old man was shot twice in front of 2774 Dewey Ave. He was hospitalized in stable condition.

Also around 1:30 a.m., a 29-year-old man walked into NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln in the Bronx with a gunshot wound to his left leg. He was listed in stable condition.

A woman was shot in the leg at 179 Livonia Ave. in Brownsville, Brooklyn, around 1:30 a.m. She was transported to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition.

Just before 1:45 a.m., there was a double shooting at E. 176th Street and the Grand Concourse in the Bronx, police said.

A 21-year-old man was shot in the arm and transported to BronxCare Health System. Details about the second victim weren't immediately known.

At 2:20 a.m., a 20-year-old man was shot in the leg at 344 Chester St. in Brownsville. He was taken to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition.
