NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A man in his 70s died shortly after he received the COVID-19 vaccine Sunday morning at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, health officials confirmed Monday morning.

According to New York State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker the unidentified man collapsed as he was leaving the vaccination site.

First responders and on-site security were at the man's side "within seconds" just before 11 a.m. then taken by Senior Care to an area hospital where he died a short time later, according to Zucker.

The man, in his 70s, fell as he was leaving the building about 25 minutes after his vaccination, according to a statement from New York state health commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker.

The incident occurred about 25 minutes after the vaccination and the man "exhibited no adverse reactions or any distress," following the required 15-minute observation period.

“Initial indications are that the man did not have any allergic reaction to the vaccine,” Zucker said in a statement.

Zucker noted that he and other health experts agree that the coronavirus vaccine is safe and combined with wearing a mask and social distancing, it will bring an end to this pandemic,” said Zucker.

"I encourage all eligible New Yorkers to get vaccinated," Zucker added.
