NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A 58-year-old man has been arrested and charged with hate crimes, including attempted murder, after making antisemitic slurs and threats directed at a Brooklyn Yeshiva then jumping the curb with the intention of hitting students.
At around 11:34 a.m., suspect Asghar Ali, driving a white 2011 Ford Crown Victoria, made antisemitic remarks directed at students outside the Mesivta Nachlas Yakov School in Carnarsie, according to officials. He then jumped the curb with his vehicle with the intention of striking the students, but he then hit a pole.
There were no injuries reported.
Reporter Mack Rosenberg posted on X from the scene, "Eyewitness tells me it looked like the car was driving 60 miles per hour and trying to run over people in front of the school. Driver yelled 'I wanna kill people and Jews.'"
Mayor Eric Adams told 1010 WINS' Lori Madden that his team sent over a video which was “extremely disturbing.”
He said, “He essentially mounted the sidewalk” and “used antisemitic slurs in the process.” Adams added that the individual “was emotionally disturbed” and praised the NYPD for their “quick apprehension.”
Adams also confirmed, “Yes, it will be investigated as a potential hate crime.”
“There is no place for hate in the city," Adams said.
No other details were released and the investigation remains ongoing.
