NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A man was fighting for his life Tuesday after he tripped at the Union Square subway station and fell into the path of a 5 train, police said, while another man was injured in the Bronx when he leaned over the tracks and was struck in the head by an oncoming train.
The Union Square victim was walking along the edge of the northbound 5 platform just before 9:30 a.m. when he tripped and fell onto the tracks as a train entered the station, according to cops.
The train's conductor saw him and slammed on the brakes—but he didn't stop in time and the man was hit by the train, police said.
The victim was rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where he was in critical condition.
Less than two hours later in the Bronx, a 62-year-old man was struck in the head by a southbound 2 train, police said.
The man was leaning over the tracks at the elevated West Farms Square–East Tremont Avenue station around 11:15 a.m. when a train entered the station and hit his head.
He was injured but never left the platform, police said. He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition.
The two incidents were causing delays on some 2, 4, 5 and 6 trains into the afternoon, the MTA said.
