NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 41-year-man was sentenced to five years in prison Monday for violently robbing and assaulting a woman in a subway station last year, District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced.

“This was a violent and senseless attack that caused the victim serious injuries,” Bragg said. “The subway helps keep New York City moving, and we will continue to use all tools at our disposal to keep straphangers safe.”

On Nov. 21, 2021, Kevin Douglas spotted the 23-year-old woman, Bew Jirajariyawetch, standing at the 34th Street Herald Square subway station, authorities said.

Douglas lunged at Jirajariyawetch when no one was looking and dragged her behind a staircase in the station, according to officials.

Jirajariyawetch was thrown to the ground by Douglas before he stole her purse and punched her in the face four times. After assaulting her, he fled the scene with her belongings. The whole incident was captured on surveillance video, court documents show.

Jirajariyawetch suffered bleeding from her nose and mouth and had cuts all over her face.

Back in July, Douglas entered a plea deal with prosecutors. Along with his five-year prison sentence, Douglas was also given two-and-a-half years of post-release supervision.
