NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A 61-year-old man was stabbed in the head and face with a screwdriver in a random attack on a subway train at Columbus Circle on Thursday night, police said.
The attacker—only described as wearing a face mask and black baseball cap—was pacing back and forth, screwdriver in hand, through a downtown 1 train at 9:45 p.m. when he suddenly picked out the victim and repeatedly stabbed him for no reason.
No words were exchanged before he plunged the screwdriver into the victim's head and lip area, according to police.
The victim was transported to Mount Sinai West, where he was recovering Friday in stable condition with a stab wound to his head and a gash to his lip.
The attacker fled at the 59th Street–Columbus Circle station and ran to the street. He remained at large Friday. Police haven't yet put out surveillance images of him.
