NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A man and a woman were killed in a Bronx apartment building Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The three-alarm blaze broke out around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday on the top floor of a five-story building near the intersection of 242nd Street and Barnes Avenue.

The 30-year-old man died at the scene, and the woman died in the hospital. Their identities have not been released.

Three civilians and five FDNY firefighters suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Deputy Assistant Chief Brian Cordasco said the cause of the blaze — which left a gaping hole in the building — is under investigation.

Neighbors told WABC-7 that the building has been the site of previous fires, including a serious one years ago, but no one has ever been killed as a result.

"Because we've been through this before, you just automatically jump up," said resident Ena Griffin. "And I grabbed my son, and I tell him to come, let's leave."

The Red Cross is supporting displaced families.
